Conner was bred by Karen and Bernie Martin of Danemark Great Danes (Formerly
Diamond Danes). He came to live with me when he was just 9 weeks old. When
I went to the airport to pick him up, he came out of the crate like he had
known me from birth. He was wagging his tail and happy to be home.
Conner took his time to mature. He was a tall dog with a gorgeous head, but
at a year old, I have to admit, I wondered if he'd ever have a front or a
body. All it took was patience. By the time he was 20 months old, people
were coming up and asking me who he was. Nobody recognized him. He had
finally started to mature and took his sweet time doing so. He wasn't fully
bodied out until he was about 5 years old.
Although he was quite a lovely dog, Conner hated to show. Once he started to
mature, he started winning pretty regularly despite the fact that he looked
like he could be asleep on his feet. It was next to impossible to get any
animation out of him in the ring. He started out earning 9 points in two
weeks and then took reserves almost every weekend for about 8 months. Then
he finally took off again and won every show until he finished. It was a
year to the day from his first point to his last.
Because of his loathing of the show ring, this dog was only shown as a special
a handful of times. Even so, he did quite well as an uncropped, owner-handled
dog. He made the first cut in the Best of Breed class at the GDCA National Specialty
in Fort Worth, TX in 1998. He made it down to the final 3 dogs, along with the #1
Great Dane in the US at that time, for BOB at our own regional specialty. On that
day, the BISS went to the WD, a spectacular puppy from the 9-12 class!
On his final trip to the specials ring, Conner was owner-handled to Best in Specialty Show
from the Veterans Class at 8 years old!
Conner lived to be 12 years old. His entire case history can be read on
the Memorials page on this site. He was a very healthy, sound dog.
There is a very limited amount of frozen semen on this dog. I might consider
making some of it available if the right bitch were to come along.
